Термин подразумевает процесс биологического окисления различных органических соединений, включающий участок окислительной цепи с сопряжённым фосфорилированием и генерацией молекул АТФ.
Форма клеточного дыхания, происходящего без участия молекулярного кислорода, при которой субстрат не окисляется полностью до двуокиси углерода и воды.
Процесс полного окисления углеводов на двуокись углерода и воду с использованием молекулярного кислорода.
Один из видов анаэробного дыхания (см. также метаногенез).
